Our Charity supports the Royal Institution at £30,000 a year for 3 years

Early this year, we decided to support the Royal Institution  ‘Sixth form–to–Primary’ Masterclasses during the 2021-22 Academic Year. These have proven extremely successful with secondary and primary schools alike and have grown in numbers across the UK year-on-year since they started in 2016.

We have been impressed with the overall impact and have agreed to fund these at a more substantial level of £30,000 a year for the next 3 academic years, which amounts to about 25% of the projected costs.  The Masterclasses involve sixth form students developing and delivering the workshops using Off-the-Shelf Ri materials, as well as attending as helpers to support the primary students. Each Masterclass series consists of 6 sessions spaced over 2 months, including topics such as “The Bridges of Konigsberg” and “Mobius Bands”.

The majority are delivered in primary or secondary schools for clusters of local primary schools The benefits to the 6th formers are numerous: these are run as a formal project in their schools, beginning with a training session run by Ri Masterclass staff. The training session is highly valued by schools, offering expert advice in developing interactive mathematical activities, as well as ‘soft skills’ such as presentation skills and project management.

This year the Masterclasses are on track to engage a total of 1,084 school students (409 6th-formers and 675 primary students) over a total of 27 Masterclass series. The target in 2024-25 is to deliver and support 50 Masterclass Series, an increase of 85%.  This would involve a total of 1850 school students (around 600 6th-formers and 1,250 primary students)  with a total of 40 training sessions and 250 Primary Masterclass Sessions involving 295 schools (45 6th-form schools and 250 primary schools).
